Promoting Theatre Arts in the Lives of Today's Youth

I am a senior at San Diego State University. I am a theatre arts major and am working towards my Bachelor of Arts degree. It is my goal to become a teacher of theatre arts and expose children to theatre. For my talent I will be performing a comedic monologue. I have been acting since I was 13 and I have been in love with theatre ever since.

As Miss San Diego it will be my goal to reach out and implement programs that promote theatre arts in classrooms at the national level. I will meet with political members and educate them on the importance of theatre arts and the enrichment value theatre provides to children’s lives.

As a R.E.A.D.Y. program tutor I was able to teach my after-school class of fourth through sixth graders a six week lesson in drama. By the end of the six weeks they had learned the complete process of staging a production and produced two one act plays. I was so proud of them and could see the impact this lesson had on them.

Currently I am a member of Teatro Alto (A Liberated Theatre Organization) and I am working with the committee on creating new ideas for performing at local San Diego schools. Last year I had the privilege of becoming a cast member in a children’s show which toured to a school in San Ysidro, CA and other locations in San Diego performing for children. Some of these children have never been exposed to theatre before and as Miss San Diego I will take advantage of opportunities to expose children to theatre.

My plan as Miss San Diego is to share with people of the community the impact theatre has had on my life. It is my goal to teach theatre arts and also continue my acting career because it has helped me to build so much confidence in myself. I feel I am a well rounded individual because of my involvement with theatre and the amazing support I have received while working with people that have the same passion in life.
